The thing that I really don't get, is the entire space thing. I mean, what in the world was Hugh Jackman's character (Tommy), doing in that nebula? I get that he's with the tree of life and also looking for a way to prolong his wife Izzi's (Rachel Weisz) life, but how he got there and how exactly it helped with his looking for a cure for death, I just really didn't get.
In fact, I think the movie would've been better without it.
I mean, I got the parallelism between the real world, where Tommy's a doctor, looking for a cure for his wife's cancer, and how in Izzi's book, he was a Spanish conquistador looking for the tree of life (or the "fountain of youth") for the Queen. I understood that he was trying to defy death and that he was fighting for a cause, in both worlds. But what did being bald and in space, have to do with all that?!
Anyway, this movie seems a lot like Princess D (Daniel Wu, Edison Chen), at least in style and kind of setting (fantasy/futuristic/present-day problems), but the theme is of course, completely different. I mean, Princess D is about a computer game, and The Fountain is about the fountain of youth. Oh, well...
My friend told me that one of the reviews for this was that it was "ahead of its time", and I can totally understand why people would say it. It's pretty boring, for the usual "movie", and I would also understand if people say it's bad and a waste of time. But I'm thinking that it's probably just too abstract and that's why it doesn't cater to the masses. Anyway, don't watch it if you're looking for something fun to do, but do watch it if you're in the mood to ponder about life, or death.
