Okay, I didn't watch Save the Last Dance (with Julia Stiles) and I don't know much about dance in general so go easy on me when I say that I like this movie.
Don't get me wrong, it could use a lot more work. I totally agree with my sister when she said that there was a problem with a directing and that it was probably because their director was just a choreographer and not really a director. It turns out she's right. This is the first directing gig of Anne Fletcher, however it's not her first time as a choreographer. The movies she choreographed are pretty big actually (Ice Princess, Bring It On, etc). I guess it goes to show that it can be obvious in movies where you really come from.
What came as a surprise to me was how good Channing Tatum (Tyler) was. Probably not with the acting, but he can really dance! I mean, I was expecting him to have a double since in the other movie of his that I saw (She's the Man), he didn't really do anything much but play soccer (and a lot of guys are good at soccer), but I guess he's really got that bodily-kinesthetic intelligence goin' on. :P And he's cute to boot, too. I imagine the producers, casting directors, etc are just salivating over him now. Or I could be wrong, because like I said, he's not that good in acting. I mean, he eats his words, he talks too fast, but maybe that just comes with the character. Either way, I was blown away, and the only thing that disappointed me about him was how he was soo tall and his proportion seemed weird.
I don't have anything very remarkable to say about Jenna Dewan (Nora). I mean, she's a good dancer, but we all already know that from her other movie (Take the Lead (though I didn't really get to watch this one)), and I guess she's an adequate actress. She kind of reminds me of Denise Richards, but a more, grounded version.
All in all, I had a lot of fun watching this movie. Despite one (spoiler coming up) character death. There wasn't really anything wrong with the story, perhaps it was just the way some lines were delivered that's why some of the conflicts seemed like they came out of nowhere. But I liked the part where Nora's other love interest, Brett, told her all about not being able to resist when your dream is handed to you in a platter, how you wouldn't think about who you're going to step on along the way, what you'll have to sacrifice. I think if they concentrated on that aspect of the story, they might've had a better film.
But hey, what do I know?
