Well, if anyone's curious as to why it's taken me this long to write a review for this movie, that would be because of work. Stupid thing keeps interrupting my continuous quest for alienation from the world and familiarization with technology. Uhm, okay that doesn't make sense. But speaking of aliens...
Superman Returns, I guess, is a bit better than I expected, although I wasn't really expecting much considering the director is Bryan Singer (X-Men 1 & 2) and I'm not too crazy about him. I find it weird that a lot of people found this movie so cool, and even think that it's one of the best they've seen this year, because I didn't find it very impressive.
What I like most about it is how it has the same style as the original Superman movies (even the opening credits were somewhat similar), and how Brandon Routh looks sooo good and almost exactly like Christopher Reeve. But aside from him, I'm not a very big fan of the casting decisions made for this movie. I mean, sure, Kate Bosworth is pretty, but she just didn't seem to do Lois Lane justice. I mean, Lois is supposed to be headstrong and all that, and not just a pretty face. Plus, I think she looks a lot better blonde. And although admittedly, I used to like James Marsden, I think I've just about had enough of him, playing the "nice guy who doesn't really get the girl" role (i.e. The Notebook, X-Men (okay, he gets the girl in X-Men, but I mean, come on, what a price to pay). Also, even if I'm a fan of Parker Posey, I didn't really like the comedy angle on Lex.
Okay, okay, I know that the original Superman movies had Lex doing some comedy too and I guess it's Smallville and Lois & Clark's fault that I think he should be the serious type, but still, I hated how he's supposed to be this super genius villain, and all he can come up with is the age old "let's conquer the world" ploy. And how come they never explained how he found the Fortress of Solitude in the first place, and really, I think they wasted the potential of that angle. I mean, the Fortress of Solitude is like Superman's deep hidden secret, surely, they could've done more than just steal some crystals to make land. I mean, come on. Couldn't the crystals have other kinds of power? Or, couldn't Lex have thought of something other than Kryptonite that can be Superman's weakness or something? Okay, maybe that would be deviating too much from the original story, but what's the point of doing a remake when you don't say anything new?
I didn't like the whole "mom" aspect of Lois either. I mean, sure, it was cool that after Superman left, she didn't just wait around stupidly, but the twist with the kid was just a tad too predictable, and so obviously a set up for a sequel. Not that I'd mind a sequel. After all, they left a lot of unanswered questions (probably on purpose, because they're already planning on a sequel). I just wish they'd made things more unpredictable.
That's weird. Inside the cinema, I could feel myself getting excited as the movie played on, but now that I think about it, it doesn't seem that good, actually. *shrugs* Well, let's see how the sequel turns out.
Oh, and extra applause for the part where Lois flew with Superman. It was way more realistic than the scene in the first Superman. And, "Pulitzer Prizes are like Academy Awards. Nobody remembers what you got one for, just that you got one," is such a corny line. The script somehow redeems itself when (James Marsden) Richard (what a cliche name) rescues Lois and she asks him how he got there and he said, "I flew," of course, with the pun on how Superman flies too and Richard's a pilot and all that.
