I don't think I was already blogging at the time that Minority Report was shown in cinemas though if I was, I'd probably look back at my review for that movie and get some ideas because the feeling I got after watching this one is almost the same. I do still remember what I did then though, right after the credits rolled up the screen, I sent an SMS to my friend saying that she should see it ASAP because it was just $#$@$! Hanep! And I do remember telling my sister somewhere in the middle of watching this 3rd (and last?) installment of the X-Men movies that even if there are points that make the movie seem like it's gonna suck, it's immediately followed by a scene or a line that neutralizes those bad elements. Well, I don't want to spoil too much in here, but I'll try to do the best I can with this review.
Probably the worst aspect of this movie was the screenplay, which is a little ironic, considering it hardly had any of that. I guess a lot of dialogue isn't really needed, so it's good that they made the characters' lines very minimal, but bad, that they already had very little to say, and yet they still weren't funny. Sure, there were some lines that made sense, (i.e. When Scott told Logan to get off his back about getting over Jean's death: "Not all of us heals as fast as you, Logan." (this is my favorite line, by the way, and I'm totally biased because I like Wolverine's power)) but there were a lot more that I really wish they'd edited out (i.e. When Wolverine said, "We stand together. X-Men." I mean, seriously, ew!). I guess that's what made the scenes without dialogue a lot more interesting.
The plot was just brilliant. Having invented a "cure" for the mutant gene? I mean, whoever thought of that was a genius. I think one of the most interesting plots is those that involve having the capacity to change or end something that has been established in a certain universe (i.e. if he gets power from trees, then take away all the trees and see where he gets his power then). And the way that plot was executed in this movie was so great, I don't even want to mention anymore the whole special effects and action scenes angle, because they're not what make this movie good. Not saying that that angle sucks, just that, I want to emphasize how it's not your ordinary sci-fi/fantasy action movie, because the story, makes it have substance.
My absolute favorite scene was the one where Wolverine, Storm and Beast were faced with a moral dilemma (how many "action" movies do you see that have moral dilemma?!) SEMI-SPOILER-START (highlight to read) -- they needed to stop Magneto's wrath, but would they go so far as to use the "cure" themselves? -- SEMI-SPOILER-END. And of course, all the scenes with either Pyro or Angel (and now I'm back to being a fan girl hehe).
Anyway, I totally loved it. I hated the screenplay and the scoring isn't very good either, and some parts made me angry, but I think it's so cool how it was able to stir up emotions in me. I actually cried twice while watching it. (Haha, I'm making it sound like a drama film.) But seriously, I didn't think I would be as impressed as I was because I hated X-Men 1. I liked X-Men 2 a lot, though I think it's safe to say that in this case, the 3rd one most definitely is an improvement from those that preceded it. It's highly highly highly recommended! (Though I hope that line won't make everyone expect too much and then suddenly get disappointed because of all my spazzing. :P)
